Quote of the Week

“If the man’s not there, someone else will do the work. If it doesn’t get done, maybe it’s not necessary.
If we haven’t done an inspection in seven years, maybe we don’t need an inspection.”

- Councillor Ian MacLeod
- on a proposed hiring freeze

Council met on Tuesday, March 31, to continue efforts to trim the 2009 budget. It was their first official budget meeting in nearly two months, and one of the items on the table was a potential hiring freeze for the municipality.
“I think we should put a hold on hiring anybody for the year,” said Councillor David Cole, broaching the subject. “It seems we keep on hiring people, hiring people, hiring people. I don’t agree with it. I do not agree with any hiring at all and I’d like to see a moratorium until next budget.”
Putting a stop to hiring for the year would eliminate planned positions in Public Works and the finance department. Public Works Superintendent Ray Mahieux argued in favour of the two positions in his department.
One is a second assistant position for the summer months, while the other is a new lineman position in the electrical department.

Currently, said Mahieux, they pay $8000 to hire part-time help in that department, which is seeing an increased workload from growth and new requirements. He said that some work is not getting done currently, and there is no time for preventative maintenance on the electrical system or needed upgrades.
The position requested in the budget was already knocked back to a half-year position in 2009 to help save money.
“It would be nice to go out and hire a hundred people,” said Councillor Ian MacLeod in response to Mahieux’s argument. “If the man’s not there, someone else will do the necessary work. If it doesn’t get done, maybe it’s not necessary. If we haven’t done an inspection in seven years, maybe we don’t need an inspection.”
