Crowsnest Wing Fest 2009, the annual spring birding festival hosted by Crowsnest Conservation, will take to the trails and the air for one week beginning Wednesday, May 27.
Merilyn Liddell, chairperson of the Birding Committee, says that this will be the seventh annual spring birding festival, and that there will be numerous birding walks available for people of all experience and interest.
“The birding festival is a great opportunity to get outdoors, see the birds, see the scenery, and see all the great things the Crowsnest Pass has to offer,” she says.
All walks will begin at the Crowsnest Conservation office located at 12707 20th Avenue Blairmore, with carpooling available from there. No advance registration is necessary, though there will be a small fee for those who are not members of Crowsnest Conservation –– $5 for a regular half-day walk, or $25 for the full week.
The following birding walks are available: Crowsnest and Summit Lakes on May 27, 5:00 p.m.; Beauvais Lake Provincial Park, May 28, 6:00 a.m.; Atlas Road, May 29, 6:00 a.m.; Lundbreck, Todd Creek, at 5:00 p.m.; Burmis Lake, May 30, 6:00 a.m.; Tent Mountain Road at 5:00 p.m.; The Gap on May 31, 7:00 a.m.; Hillcrest, Frank, and local wetlands on June 1, 6:00 a.m. and 5:00 p.m.; Lee Lake on June 2, 6:00 a.m.; York Creek at 5:00 p.m.; and Chinook Lake on June 3, 7:00 a.m.
Liddell notes that they will be out even if the weather is bad, because the birds will still be there. She encourages participants to dress appropriately.
Most walks will be finished in the early afternoon, she says, while some are all-day and evening walks will last approximately three hours.
