The Crowsnest Pass is a community spread over a large land area, and when it comes to law enforcement, the police can’t be everywhere. Thankfully, there’s a group of dedicated volunteers who are on patrol in our community to serve as extra eyes and ears for the RCMP.
Citizens on Patrol (COP) has been active in the Pass since 1997, and currently has 32 members patrolling many portions of the community.
Members of COP are not police officers and never confront anyone. They are simply out in the community watching for suspicious activity, and anything observed is reported to the RCMP.
All volunteers with COP work anonymously and are trained for the work.
The efforts of COP members help reduce incidences of crime such as theft of motor vehicles, break and enters, vandalism, and impaired driving.
While on patrol, which is always done in pairs, they report any crimes in progress or suspicious activity or vehicles they notice.
Members of COP are accessible to the RCMP to assist with such things as locating missing children or persons wanted by the police.
COP is also available to do residence and business checks when people are away, to ensure no vandalism or break-ins are taking place.
In 2010, COP Crowsnest Pass will be hosting the Alberta Citizens on Patrol Conference.
COP is always looking for more members to help them maintain and expand their coverage in the Pass. All residents 18 years of age or older are welcome, and only a record check is necessary to join.
For more information on becoming a member of COP to help make a difference in our community, contact the RCMP detachment at 403-562-2867, or email cnpcop@shaw.ca.
