Quote of the Week
“Your company has actually raped these valleys. I don’t agree with your logging practices. And for the citizens, I hope they raise holy hell over it.”
- Councillor David Cole

The Pass Herald began in 1930, but since 1974 two weekly newspapers have been published in the Crowsnest Pass. Beginning this week, only one of them will carry notices and advertising from the local municipality.
On Tuesday, June 16, council voted unanimously to award the municipal advertising contract to the Crowsnest Pass Herald from June 23 to December 31, 2009. During the contract period, the Pass Herald will be the only local newspaper to carry notices of public hearing, advertising about municipal events, municipal employment ads, notices of development permits, and all other municipal notices and advertisements.
Both local newspapers submitted proposals for advertising to the municipality, after council voted to tender out the advertising to a single paper. The bid was based on the price of a full page of advertising.
Chief Administrative Officer Gordon Lundy recommended that the contract be awarded to the Pass Herald, which came in with the lowest bid.

“We’ve got two very good papers in the Crowsnest Pass,” said Councillor Gary Taje. “Unfortunately we decided to just award advertising to one of them. The loser here is the people of the Crowsnest Pass.” He said that he disagrees with only providing municipal advertising in one newspaper.
“I think we have an obligation to go with the best tender,” said Councillor Dean Ward, supporting the motion to award the contract to the Pass Herald.
Mayor John Irwin noted that the Pass Herald also has a much higher circulation, which should play a significant role in council’s decision along with the fact that the Herald’s tender was lowest.
The advertising is to be re-tendered on a yearly basis.
See Page 12 of this issue for the first full page of municipal notices exclusive to the Pass Herald.
