Quote of the Week
“There is a beautiful result. In the meantime things are held up, there are delays, but they did their best.”

Athletes and families from throughout southern Alberta are arriving in the Crowsnest Pass, for the 40th anniversary of the Southern Alberta Summer Games. With more than 1500 participants taking part in dozens of sports, cultural, and entertainment events from July 8 to 11, it promises to be four incredible days in the Pass.
Summer Games Coordinator Amy Boeckner says that everyone involved has been very busy in the weeks leading up to the opening. She is happy to report that local and area residents have come through and volunteered in enough numbers to help everything go off as planned.
“People came out in droves to help out,” says Boeckner. “The volunteers have been great.”
Events will kick off on Wednesday, July 8, with distance running in Hillcrest, baseball in Bellevue and Hillcrest, and mini-soccer at Horace Allen School. There will be a medal ceremony at the Isabelle Sellon School field that evening at 6:00 p.m., and the opening ceremonies for the Games will take place afterward, beginning at 7:00 p.m.
The opening ceremonies will include a musical performance by Cam Penner and the Gravel Road, along with other entertainment, followed by a fireworks show at 11:00 p.m. that evening.
Further entertainment events during the Games include the Movie in the Park at the ISS field on Thursday evening, with events starting at 7:00 p.m. and the movie at 10:00 p.m. Tim Hus and special guests will perform on Friday evening at the ISS field at 7:00 p.m.
Summer Games Central will be located at the Elks Hall in Blairmore, along with the photography competition, all four days of the Games. There will be a craft fair at the Elks Hall Thursday through Saturday as well.

Baseball and mini-soccer continue on Thursday, and are joined by several other sports. Athletics will take place at the ISS field, beach volleyball and tennis at Flumerfelt Park, golf at the local course, and road cycling on Highway 507 and Willow Drive.
Golf and tennis continue on Friday, along with a bevy of new events to kick off the weekend. Badminton takes place at the high school, bowling at the lanes in Blairmore, cribbage at the Bellevue Legion, gymnastics at the M.D. McEachern, kayak and canoe on the Crowsnest River in Blairmore, lacrosse at the Albert Stella, slo-pitch in Hillcrest, swimming at the pool in Blairmore, rock climbing at the Albert Stella, and soccer on all three school fields.
Saturday-only events will be basketball at the high school, three shooting events at the Coleman gun range, mountain biking on the ski hill, and martial arts at the Sports Complex in Coleman.
Swimming, cycling, kayaking, slo-pitch, and soccer all continue on Saturday as well.
Dozens of businesses and individuals have donated to sponsor the Games and help make this special 40th anniversary edition of the event a huge success.
It is hoped that with the multiple entertainment and cultural events taking place, visitors will come and stay for the entire four days in the community. A Games of this magnitude is expected to leave a legacy of equipment and facility upgrades in different parts of the community.
Everyone is invited and welcome to take part in all of the entertainment events at no cost, and to come out and support our local participants.
See Page 8 of this issue for a complete schedule. Please note that the horseshoes event has been cancelled due to low registration, and that minor baseball has been moved from Hillcrest to the M.D. McEachern ball diamonds in Bellevue, while major and bantam ball remains in Hillcrest. The craft fair, listed in the schedule for the Sports Complex, has been moved to the Elks Hall.
