Quote of the Week
“I think that the community put on a fantastic event.”
- Cam Mertz
- on the Southern Alberta
Summer Games

The 40th anniversary of the Southern Alberta Summer Games was held in the Crowsnest Pass from July 8 to 11, and the Pass made an excellent showing of itself. Crowsnest Pass athletes showed up in large numbers, and captured both the most gold medals (97) and the most medals overall (188) to win these special anniversary Games.
"It went very well," says Cam Mertz, Director of Community Services, who along with Summer Games Coordinator Amy Boecker and numerous volunteers helped organize the Games. "I think that the community put on a fantastic event."
Mertz says that he feels the organizers met their goals of getting people to stay in the Pass for the entire event, experiencing what the community has to offer.
And though poor weather got in the way of some events on the first two days, attendance was still strong for many of the week's activities.
He adds that he is happy the Pass got to play a role in celebrating such an important legacy with the Southern Alberta Summer Games.
The Pass won a total of 97 gold medals, 52 silver medals, and 39 bronze medals, for a total of 188. City of Lethbridge placed second with 160 medals, followed by the MD of Taber (154), County of Willow Creek (118), Medicine Hat (99), County of Pincher Creek (93), County of Newall (63), County of Lethbridge (48), County of Warner (43), Cypress County (41), County of Forty Mile (34), County of Vulcan (29), and Cardston (27).
