Numbers in most types of criminal offenses in the Crowsnest Pass are down slightly from the same time last year, according to the RCMP's second quarter statistics. These stats cover the period from July 1 to September 30, and were presented to council by Sergeant Scott Howard on Tuesday, November 24.
There were 1067 reported complaints for this period in 2009, up slightly from 1028 in 2008, but the numbers in several big areas were down somewhat from the same period a year ago.
Reported break and enters were down from 26 to 13; reported property damage was down from 71 to 59; reported thefts were down from 65 to 43; and reported traffic related offenses were down from 194 to 167.

False alarms were up slightly, from 113 to 127, and reported assaults were up from 16 to 19. The reported numbers do not take into account whether or not the incident resulted in charges or whether or not it was unfounded. The numbers fluctuate from year to year, and one year's sample cannot be taken to definitively represent a trend.
Sergeant Howard included information on Thunder in the Valley policing, which took place within this time frame. Over that weekend, he said, there were four times the normal volume of complaints; 115 liquor tickets were issued along with 39 traffic tickets.
The cost of Thunder in the Valley policing was $40,000 this year, up from $28,000 last year due to travel costs. The municipality contributed $10,000 toward that cost.
