Relocation from Blairmore to take place
Lethbridge College and the municipality have agreed to terms on the relocation of the educational consortium from the Crowsnest Centre to the M.D. McEachern. A memorandum of understanding between the two was officially approved by council at their Tuesday, May 18 meeting.
The memorandum is a less formal document outlining the general terms and conditions that will be incorporated into a formal agreement in the near future.
The agreement calls for a three-year lease on the second floor of the MDM. Lethbridge College would occupy nearly the entire second floor except for the space leased by the library. They would lease a total of 4340 square feet.
For its part, the municipality will be required to perform certain minor renovations to the leased space, including data and phone infrastructure, and renovating two existing classrooms into four smaller spaces and a data room.
The total cost of these renovations is estimated at $22,500. Lethbridge College will provide $10,000 toward those costs, with the remainder to be covered by general increased revenue in the building. All utility costs, including electricity, water, and gas, will be the municipality's responsibility.
Lethbridge College will pay $24,038 in the first year, which will increase to $25,451 in the third year. This includes a fee for daily janitorial services. Parking for staff, students, and visitors will be provided free of charge.
Community Services Director Cam Mertz also reported that Lethbridge College intends to provide space for and share resources with Adult Education and Adult Literacy, as they have done at the Centre.
He added that hours at the facility would be extended when required by Lethbridge College to accommodate their programming.
Current lease revenue at the building is approximately $37,000. This is expected to rise to roughly $63,000 with the inclusion of Lethbridge College and Indoor Playground at the building, though this will also come with some increased costs.
