Quote of the Week
“They’re not invalids. They should be getting out and cleaning their yards.”

After the corporate review by George Cuff, released last fall, indicated that they should do so, council hired Farmer and Associates to create a strategic plan for the municipality. On Tuesday, May 18, that plan was presented to council.
The plan divides municipal operations into different sections, and presents a list of priorities and a desired timetable for completion of these priorities in each section.
Priorities listed in the plan include developing a long term equipment replacement plan, conducting a feasibility study on consolidating Public Works buildings, and developing an emergency road connecting Blairmore and Coleman.
The plan also suggests possibly hiring a full time emergency services chief, and looking into installing a chair lift at the ski hill. The plan suggests the municipality appoint a community events coordinator, and explore the possibility of developing an arts, culture, and music centre.

Further suggestions include possibly hiring an economic development officer, developing a strategy to maintain and diversify volunteerism, and doing a cost/benefit review of public transportation. The plan suggests developing a policy for governance training for councillors, and developing a long term plan to address the lack of office space at the municipal office.
The strategic plan lists findings from public consultation. Under a governance section, public input indicated that "there are issues with the leadership provided by council."
"Council is seen as a roadblock to new development within the town and is perceived to micro manage in operational meetings," states this section. It indicates that council is perceived to not have a vision, and that they should not do planning in a piecemeal fashion.
