Quote of the Week
“The chances of me actually making it were very, very low. I had the race of my life.”
- Adrian Cole
- on making the Junior
National Team

Local kayaker Adrian Cole is in for the experience of a lifetime after pushing himself to the limit and qualifying for the Canadian Junior National Team. With this accomplishment, Cole will compete in the Junior World Championships in France this summer.
The 17-year-old Cole took part in the Junior National Team trials in Squamish, British Columbia, in mid-May. Competition took place on the Mamquam River, and featured a very strong array of athletes. Cole says that with such strong competition, he was not expected to qualify.
"The chances of me actually making it were very, very low," says Cole. "I had the race of my life. For me, it was a pretty big deal."
Cole placed third in the K1-M category, which designates men in single kayaks, earning him a space on the team. He will be leaving in mid-June to start a full training camp in Ottawa, before travelling to Foix, France, for further training and races from July 8 to 11.
"I've never been to Europe before," says Cole. "It's a great opportunity for me."

He says that he found it extremely difficult to focus on just doing his best at the trial races, given the high calibre of his competition. He says that he feels he is still improving after every major training camp he attends, and that the training has paid off.
Last year he qualified for the development team with the junior national squad, but this is the first time he has earned a place on the main team.
Following the competition in France, Cole will take part in the Canadian National Championships during the August long weekend.
Cole's family in the Pass is creating a t-shirt to commemorate his accomplishment, as a way to let the community help sponsor his trip and show support for his efforts. For more information, contact Joanne Cole at 403-562-8698.
