Thunder in the Valley

The 2010 Thunder in the Valley fireworks show is fast approaching, scheduled for the evening of Saturday, July 17, and the members of the Blairmore Fire Department are preparing for another big show.
Their t-shirt fundraiser is currently underway, with proceeds going toward the purchase of fireworks. The t-shirt sales are one of the largest sources of funds for the fireworks, and each year's shirt features a new design. This year's design, created once again by local designer Chad Petrone of Logomotives, features firefighters battling a blaze in a fireworks factory.
Blairmore Fire Chief Jamie Margetak says that they are keeping the shirts black, as it has proven to be the most popular colour. He adds that they are trying to get hats, tank tops, and zippered hoodies with the design as well. Shirts are currently available at Rexall Pharmacy and Neat 'N Nifty in Blairmore.

Margetak says that they are purchasing Spanish fireworks shells from the same supplier as last year. These shells, he said, provide brighter colours, a longer burn, and nicer effects than many other shells.
"We'll be doing something extra this year," he adds, "but we're not telling you what."
They will be hiring security for the Isabelle Sellon field once again, to keep alcohol out of the field and keep it as a good front row area for families.
The 50/50 draw has been a popular and growing part of the show, with last year's winning prize topping $30,000. This year, to spread the large pot around and have more winners, they will be doing a straight cash draw instead. Three prizes will be available, each up to a maximum of $10,000. The final amount will depend on the number of tickets purchased.
In the weeks leading up to Thunder in the Valley, they are also running shows for Bellecrest Days in Bellevue and for Canada Day in Granum.
