The Crowsnest Pass celebrated its annual Rum Runner Days weekend from July 15 to 17, once again drawing enormous crowds for the area’s biggest parade and the Thunder in the Valley fireworks show. Though 38 degree heat washed over the valley, it wasn’t enough to deter local residents and visitors from throughout Alberta.
The weekend kicked off with the Bill Fukami Memorial Golf Tournament, an annual fundraiser for the high school’s Academic and Athletic Society on July 15, followed by the popular Sole Survivor Foot Race on July 16, along with activities at Gazebo Park.
Saturday, July 17 brought the biggest and busiest events, including a pancake breakfast by the Blairmore Lions, the parade down main street Blairmore, the show ‘n shine, the midway fair, entertainment in the park, and Thunder in the Valley.

The crowd at this year’s events were easier to deal with than in previous years, according to the RCMP. More than 20 officers were on hand through the weekend to patrol Blairmore, aided by Canadian Pacific police officers.
“Most of the crowd was well behaved,” says Corporal Kevin McKenna of the Crowsnest Pass detachment. “It went excellent.”
Only six people were arrested and held at the detachment for intoxication, compared to 17 in 2009 and over 30 in 2008. A total of 37 liquor tickets were written, and CP Police issued six trespassing tickets to individuals trespassing on Canadian Pacific property along the railway.
Specific details on some of the calls police responded to during the weekend can be found in this week’s police news, found on Page 8 of this issue.
Further photos from the weekend’s events can be found on Page 16 of this issue.
