The Crowsnest Medical Clinic has welcomed a new doctor to its practice, who may be a familiar face already to some residents.
Dr. Kristy Penner trained at the Crowsnest Medical Clinic in the spring of 2009, taking advantage of the clinic's training mandate, and enjoyed the area enough to want to return as a full doctor. This summer she is filling in for some of the other doctors, and will start full time in November.
"The area always appealed to me," says Dr. Penner. "I've been really enjoying it. Work's been really good." She says that she enjoys being in the mountains, but likes that Crowsnest Pass is smaller and not as developed as Banff or Canmore.
Originally from Kenora, Ontario, Dr. Penner has been training and learning in Alberta since 2001. She took bio-chemistry in Lethbridge, attended medical school in Edmonton, and did her family medicine residency in Lethbridge.

She says that she enjoys the idea of rural family medicine, and the opportunity to experience many types of medicine in a small town rather than having to focus more narrowly at a bigger place. She likes family medicine, obstetrics, and chronic disease management in the elderly.
"I'm hoping to have people of all ages in my practice," she says.
Dr. Penner says that she has started a list of people looking for a doctor, and hopes to take them on when she begins full time in November. New people moving into town, both for work at the mines and looking for a retirement community, have expressed interest.
She began her summer work at the clinic on July 5, after finishing the last of her medical training at the end of June. In her free time she enjoys mountain biking, and is looking forward to learning more about the community and living here full time.
