A charitable donation of $10,200 was made to the Crowsnest Pass Health Foundation this month by an anonymous donor, and was used for the purchase of a new EKG machine and phlebotomy chair for the hospital’s lab.
The donation was made in honour of the memory of Betty Carnahan, who was born and raised in the Crowsnest Pass, and passed away in August 2008.
Carnahan graduated from the St. Eugene Hospital School of Nursing in Cranbrook, B.C. in 1942, and for more than 30 years following that, she worked as a nurse at various hospitals in B.C. and Alberta before retiring to Blairmore to care for her parents.
The donation in her name was used to purchase the hospital’s new EKG machine, also known as an electrocardiogram or ECG machine, which measures the electrical activity of the human heart, and is used to care for patients with heart disease, or those suffering from a heart attack, angina, or other complications.

The EKG has already been received, and the phlebotomy – or blood draw – chair has been ordered and should be arriving soon, according to hospital staff.
The chair is equipped with a hydraulic lift mechanism to allow for the height of the chair to be adjusted, as well as extra-wide and padded arm rests, which will allow for increased patient comfort while giving blood.
Lab Technologist II and Department Head of Laboratory Services Ron Schulz said both pieces of equipment will be beneficial to lab servies.
“(The EKG) is capable of transmitting the patient’s information to internists and cardiologists anywhere,” he said, adding this too will allow for increased quality of patient care.
Harold Kind, chairman of the Crowsnest Pass Health Foundation, said the hospital is very grateful for the donation, and eagerly awaits the arrival of the phlebotomy chair.
“We get a lot of donors who wish to make their donations anonymously,” said Kind. “It is just phenomenal how generous people are around here.”
