Local store offers fantastic style at a great price
Neat ‘N Nifty, a clothing store located in downtown Blairmore, has been a fixture of the Crowsnest Pass retail community for more than 20 years, offering mid-range women’s fashions and accessories.
The store stocks business, dress, and casual wear from brands such as Tribal, Allison Sheri, Balle, Renoir, Libra, Soft Works, Hiroka, Click, and Parkhurst, as well as shoes, purses, scarves, outerwear, and jewellery.
Owner and operator Anita Ferguson says she prefers to bring in items at a mid-range price level, usually keeping the price under $100, with the exception of some outerwear.
“I don’t like to stock high priced items,” said Ferguson, who first opened the store in 1989 at Crowsnest Mall. “We try to make it affordable for everyone.”
Ferguson says she has several regular customers who come in from Lethbridge, Calgary, and even Edmonton.
The staff of Neat ‘N Nifty includes Ferguson and two employees who run the store, as Ferguson spends most of her time at her other business, the Sears retail store across the street.
“I don’t get to be (at Neat ‘N Nifty) as often as I would like, because there is so much to do at Sears,” she said.
Ferguson took over Sears in 1993 when it was just a catalogue and distribution outlet, and was located at Crowsnest Mall.
Approximately seven years ago, Ferguson amalgamated her two services and moved to the current Sears location on the northeast corner of the intersection of 20th Avenue and 129th Street in Blairmore.
She operated both businesses out of the one space for five years, until Sears informed her they wanted to expand the business to a full retail store in December 2009, allowing Ferguson to carry beds, kitchen appliances, televisions, tools, snow blowers, vacuums, and more.

She then had to quickly find a new home for Neat ‘N Nifty, and luckily enough, the building across the street was available.
“I just closed my eyes and said ‘let’s go for it’,” she said. “It has worked really well for us so far.”
The store is now located in the former Alberta Hotel building under the clock on main street, and has been renovated and decorated with many reclaimed materials.
The ceiling is adorned with reclaimed tin and hardwood, and the changing room doors were recovered from an old building.
Even though her time is divided between running the two very different stores, Ferguson says “it’s all one place to me.”
Neat ‘N Nifty holds an annual Thunder in the Valley sale, end of season sales, and has a permanent 50 per cent off clearance section.
Leading up to Valentine’s Day, Neat ‘N Nifty will also be offering 25 per cent off all jewellery.
