Quote of the Week
“We are not asking for anything more than other employees at Teck mines already enjoy.”
- Chris Nand
- Local 9346
Steelworkers Union President

The economic task force held its first official meeting last Thursday, Feb. 24th, taking the first step in the process of addressing the economic issues and priorities of the Crowsnest Pass.
After officially forming just over a week prior, the task force moved quickly to organize its first meeting, which nearly all members were able to attend.
Those who were not able to make the trip due to the poor weather communicated with the group via teleconference.
The meeting consisted mainly of Mayor Bruce Decoux, who has been working to assemble the group since November, outlining the responsibilities of the members of the task force and of its chairman.
The rest of the afternoon was spent in an organizational meeting, where members discussed how they would proceed with their task.
They also began reviewing background information, nearly 1,000 pages of documentation.

Mayor Decoux said he was pleased to learn that many of the members came to the meeting extremely prepared, having already reviewed several of the documents.
“That’s a very good sign,” said Mayor Decoux. “They are a very enthusiastic group, and really committed to this whole process.”
He said at future meetings, the task force may ask individuals who have expertise, such as representatives from various local groups such as the Chamber of Commerce, to attend and share their insights and opinions about the economy.
Decoux said they also have the authority to speak with officials from the provincial government to seek guidance and direction.
“It’s a free game for them in a sense,” said Mayor Decoux, who added that the group will decide on a date for the next meeting internally, and inform him of their decision, which he can then communicate to the public.
