Skiers and snowboarders hop on the t-bar on Thursday, January 5th.
The Pass PowderKeg Ski Resort in Blairmore officially opened for the season on December 24th, as a result of round the clock snowmaking by ski hill staff.
According to Ski Hill Manager Dave Morrison, five runs and two lifts are currently open on the lower mountain, including the beginner and Discover Ski areas.
“We’re very happy to be open and we have some really good skiing on the terrain we have open,” said Morrison.
“There is some good skiing to be had for all abilities.”
Morrison attributes the hill being able to open when it did to 24-hour snowmaking and hard work by the snowmaking crew, maintenance staff and groomer operator.
“Mother Nature has been throwing us a few curve balls and we’ve had a very challenging early season,” said Morrison.
“The weather has been really marginal in terms of conditions needed for snowmaking.”
“We haven’t had a lot of good cold days and we’ve experienced really fluctuating temperatures, very high winds and tough humidity, all of which have made things very difficult for us,” he said.

“But we’re very fortunate to have the excellent staff that we do, and we’ve made a lot of improvements to our snowmaking system and it’s really paid off in spades and allowed us to open.”
Morrison said once the weather starts to cooperate and we see a streak of successive cold days, staff can begin making snow in the terrain park and upper mountain as well.
“We’re just waiting for Mother Nature to cooperate with us a little better and to get some more good weather,” he said.
“We’re ready, we’re just waiting for the right kind of temperatures - we really need that consistent arctic cold to get really good production.”
He added with a laugh, “if we get a bunch of natural snow, that always helps our cause as well.”
The hill is currently operating under regular winter hours.
