Council voted in favour of accepting for information a letter inviting Crowsnest Pass Mayor Blair Painter to the annual Bellevue Underground Mine fundraising event during the January 7th meeting.

Proceeds from this event are used towards the engineering costs to of the new Bellevue Interpretive Centre, according to the letter written by Crystal Anne Potts-Jensen, executive director at the Bellevue Underground Mine. “To fulfill our duties as a Trust we must safeguard the preservation of the Bellevue Underground Mine and its historical value,” said Potts-Jensen.

“Through this, we will give back pride and ownership to the local community and contribute to the economic growth of the Crowsnest Pass.” On Dec 9th, 1910 a massive explosion rocked the Bellevue Underground mine causing a massive release of the poisonous and deadly gas, carbon monoxide, according to bellevueundergroundmine.org.

Thirty-one men were killed during the Bellevue Underground Mine Explosions, said the website.

The tragedy sparked the Alberta Government to institute mine rescue services province-wide.

“We are anticipating between 120 and 150 guests to attend our event and have sent out formal invitations to other dignitaries like your Worship,” Potts-Jensen writes.

The list of dignitaries includes: Honourable David Link, Assistant Deputy Minister (Heritage Division), Honourable Heather Klimchuk (Minister of Culture), The Honourable Alison Redford (Premier of Alberta), and Mrs. Ann Marie Hann, (President of the Coal Association of Canada). Teck Coal Ltd. is the title sponsor for the ‘Music for the Mine’ event.
