Rick Yanco, a supervisor for Emergency Medical Services (EMS), says the hardest part of his job is working on someone he knows.
“More often than not, in a small town, you’re going to know your patients,” says Yanco. “It makes it more difficult on the practitioner. It brings it closer to home.”
On May 27, Yanco and his team held an open house at the Crowsnest Pass Health Centre to celebrate National Emergency Medical Services (EMS) week.

He says the event was dedicated to Canadian emergency medical services personnel and everything they do.
Yanco has 29 years experience as an EMS worker, 20 of which were spent as a paramedic. He and his colleagues are responsible for responding to emergencies from Coaldale, Alberta to the B.C. border.
According to their five-year plan EMS will be focusing on eight areas to focus on through 2015. These include improving wait times for service, improving the health of the population increasing access to service.
