After promising to be an advocate for a riding that was devastated by last year’s floods, Conservative John Barlow has won the Macleod by-election with 69 per cent of the vote.
“We’re really happy with the results,” said Barlow of his election victory. “I want to get to work as quickly as I can but I’ve got to wait before I get sworn in sometime next week. I want to try and get my staff and my team together.”
Elections Canada announced the results after the last polls closed at 9:30 p.m. on June 30. Only about 18,000 out of 92,000 of eligible voters, cast a vote in this by-election, a turnout of about 20 per cent.
“We knew voter turnout was probably going to be low so we really had to work hard to get the word out there,” said Barlow.
Barlow, his family and a group of his supporters had gathered in a High River restaurant on June 30, to await the results.

“It was a really clean campaign. Everybody was above board. It really just came down to what we bring to the table,” said Barlow. “No one outworked us and that was the most important thing.”
Liberal Dustin Fuller came in second with 17 per cent of the vote.
Green party candidate Larry Ashmore came in third with about six per cent of the vote and New Democrat Aileen Burke and Christian Heritage Party candidate David Reimer tied for fourth with about 4.2 per cent.
The by-election was called after the resignation of finance minister Ted Menzies in November.
Barlow spent Canada Day attending community events around the riding including the 109th running of the Millarville Horse Races, a baseball game between the Melville Millionaires and the Okotoks Dawgs and an evening fireworks display.
