In an effort to address traffic safety issues, Highway 940 will be closed for repair work until about Oct. 31.
Ranchland CAO Greg Brkich says the work will straighten out three blind curves about 23 kilometers from where the highway – officially known as the Forestry Trunk Road and also mislabeled as Highway 40 on Google Maps – branches off from Highway 3 in Coleman.
Brkich says the road will be closed as the materials from the existing road will be removed to build the new road.
“It’s a traffic safety issue,” says Brkich. “We don’t know of any two vehicle collisions on those blind curves. But we do know in the past that one vehicle did leave the road trying to take the curve too fast.”
“We have to grade that road and we know that our grader had a few close calls,” he adds. “It’s time to bring it up to a better standard. Hopefully we’re saving somebody’s life, but we’ll never know.”

He says it is physically impossible to have a detour at the site for the traveling public. Drivers are advised to use Highway 22 and merge onto the Maycroft Road, formerly Highway 517.
The project has a $600,000 budget and will be funded from a Municipal Sustainability Initiative (MSI) capital grant. N.L. Smith out of Nanton has been awarded the contract.
The MD has announced that the road will be closed until Oct. 31 but Brkich says there is a chance it could be opened sooner.
“It all depends on the contractor’s ability to move dirt and the weather,” he says.
