A group of students from Livingstone School in Lundbreck got a lesson in sweat equity last week by stepping out of their classrooms and into the local economy.
“You should see the smiles on their faces,” said Livingstone School teacher Alan Friesen. “Like they can’t believe this is school.”
The students were participating in the Livingstone Range School Division’s third annual Experiential Learning Week, which allows them to explore subjects that are outside of the normal school curriculum.
The subjects included sports, camping, food preparation and textiles.
Some of the students, from grades 7 to 12, were at the Bamboo Bistro in Blairmore on Oct. 22 learning the culinary arts and basic food safety.
The morning saw the students doing basic prep work, serving tables and preparing meals including pizza, peanut sauce and miso soup.

“I made mine with pizza sauce, onion, green peppers, bacon and cheese,” said Ross Cook, 16. “It was delicious.”
They also made appetizers and bread rolls before splitting the afternoon between the dish pit and sweeping up the dining area.
“It exposes them to potential jobs in the future,” said Livingstone School teacher Sue-Anne Uphill. “Things like food safety and why things have to be placed in certain spots in a kitchen.”
For an afternoon activity, John Warlow, Bamboo Bistro owner, quizzed the students on the finer points of the culinary arts, challenging them to name the basic food groups and the ingredient that makes bread rise.
“I’m pretty sure they’re learning a thing or two,” said Warlow.
