At a meeting on Dec. 2, council passed a motion to reopen the Hillcrest fire hall almost two years after it was closed following the amalgamation of the Pass’ fire/rescue services.
“We need to have extra fire protection in Hillcrest and the east end of the Pass,” said Councillor Bill Kovach. “Therefore I’d like to put a motion on the floor that we open the Hillcrest fire hall as soon as possible.”
Councillor Dean Ward asked that the fire hall be entered into the budget to discuss any costs involved. Mayor Blair Painter said the costs would be negligible, as the Fire/Rescue Department already has most of the necessary equipment.

Fire Chief Jamie Wilkinson said the Hillcrest fire hall would be equipped with rapid response unit, which is a two-seater truck.
“What that’s going to do is it’s going to get two personnel out to a scene to give a size up,” said Wilkinson. “That’ll give us a really good idea of how much apparatus we may need.”
According to an article in the March 12, 2013 edition of the Crowsnest Pass Promoter, the Hillcrest fire hall was closed because was an aging building that needed significant repairs and it received the lowest number of calls.
