What’s the right gift?
Crowsnest Pass Herald Front Page
As Valentine’s Day quickly approaches, I can’t help but overhear the random conversations that most of the men around here are having. It usually starts off with, “what should I get my wife?” It is then immediately met with the stunned looks and shrugging shoulders of their friends around them, offering no help. It seems to me as though everybody is in the same boat, and we’re all lost.
But fear not, there is a solution to all of our problems. Unfortunately, it does involve some effort and planning, and I believe the gift she’s looking for isn’t necessarily bought in a store. However, keep in mind there are some of those women out there who are all about status and bank and if she’s one of those, you might want to toss that fish back into the sea, unless all you are is a trophy hunter anyways.
Who I’m actually referring to are all the real women around here. The ones who stick beside us, lift us up and work with us as a team. The women who, despite all of our bad habits and imperfections, still love and support us anyways. The women who truly deserve this effort.
Now don’t get me wrong, I too understand the panic and stress that this night has on a guy, especially when life has a way of distancing two people apart. With all the bills to pay, kids to take care of, the long work days and all the other various social engagements that go on, there doesn’t seem to be enough time for each other, does there? Besides, doesn’t it feel like Christmas and New Year’s Eve were just yesterday? I still feel like I’m recovering from the previous holiday high.
continued below...

Regardless, like it or not, this holiday is right around the corner and if you’re not prepared, then you might be left in the dust or kicked to the curb by her, quickly after.
So, if have any advice to hand out to my fellow men out there, so that they may succeed this Valentine’s Day, it would be this. Forget about shopping around for that ‘save all’ gift for her. Unless you know your woman like the back of your hand, chances are you’ll fall short of the mark and end up looking totally thoughtless and cheesy. All it will actually do is show her the lack of effort that you put into her gift, suggesting that she’s not worth it.
Instead, go above and beyond this year for the woman your life. The most precious gift we can give to someone is our time and attention, so step outside yourself and make her the main focus. Listen, talk, laugh and enjoy her, as I’m sure that’s all she really wants, and feels starved for. The whole point is it’s all about romance, not thoughtless gestures and if you truly loved her you wouldn’t need a holiday to show it.
And for the ladies… don’t think that we don’t need the same in return. Happy Valentine’s Day.
