Race to challenge young people
to reach full potential

The Search Institute has identified 40 qualities that young people need to become functioning adults.
These qualities, or developmental assets, include internal traits like caring, honesty and integrity but they also contain external assets like service to others, safety and a sense that the community values them.
To that end, 40 Developmental Assets and their steering committee are organizing an event called “The Great Crowsnest Pass Race,” a spinoff of television’s “The Amazing Race,” to let the kids of the Pass know that the community cares about them.
“I got a grant from Lethbridge Community Futures to fund a youth driven event of any kind,” said Alexis Bohmer, CNP40 program leader. “This is what I came up with.”
CNP40 is asking for businesses to volunteer their time, staff and resources to help make the race a success.

The race, which will be launched at the beginning of the school year, is in the planning stages and Bohmer said local businesses can help either by sponsoring a water or sports drink booth, providing lunches to participants or by providing venues or ideas for race challenges.
“We’re hoping that through the race we can promote as many assets as possible and have fun as well,” said Bohmer.
The racers will be teens from grades 7 to 12 split into teams of four. September 26 is the tentative start date. Competitions will include a foot and bike race around Blairmore, followed by a celebratory barbecue in the ISS field.
The Search Institute is an American organization that uses social science research to understand the lives, beliefs and values of young people. For over 50-years the institute has been an innovator in listening to youth and promoting positive change with and for young people.
