The Pass Community Pool has been a large area for concern for many in the Crowsnest Pass, especially since news arrived that the pool would not receive finances from The Canada 150 Community Infrastructure program.

This federal program supported six projects to benefit Southwestern Alberta. The Municiaplity applied for the grant in the hopes that money could be used to upgrade and repair the aging pool. The federal government chose to not fund the municipality but rather gave the funding to the United Riders Of Crowsnest Club (UROC), who received $58 000.00 while the Crowsnest Historical Society received $103 000.00.

Many were concerned this would leave the pool without much needed finances for repairs, maintenance and upgrades of the local pool.

In an Interview with, Lyle Hannan, The Director of Community Services, he said, “We have not received a formal correspondence for declining the application to the program outlining the reasons.”

The municipality has recently adopted a 10-year capitol plan, which included proceeding with the pool renovation as estimated by a consultant that reviewed the facility.

“We had always anticipated that we may have to utilize other sources or grants that we need to do this project. We were trying to reduce the potential impact by accessing this grant.”, Hannan said.

It may be of some comfort to those who use the pool regularly, that Hannan ended the interview with this, “As far as I know the plan still exists to renovate the pool substantially in the near future.”
