On Sept. 28, after months of preparation, the Hillcrest fire hall was officially reopened in front of a small crowd of local officials, volunteers and fire/rescue personnel.

“The Hillcrest Fire Department has served this community for many years,” said Mayor Blair Painter. “Most notably during the Lost Creek fire of 2003 where members of the department stayed in the hall for 30 days because that’s how long it took to get the fire under control. Volunteers would visit to give them gourmet meals and encouragement. We have great volunteers in the Crowsnest Pass and I welcome everyone to do their part to be a volunteer.”

Its primary piece of equipment will be a brush truck, which Deputy Fire Chief Curtis Stevens explained is a rapid response, off-road capable vehicle designed to combat wild land fires but can also be used to fight structure fires.

“I think it’s very significant to the community,” said Councillor Bill Kovach. “For Hillcrest it’s great. The response time will be much shorter and [the brush truck] will allow time for bigger units to come in.”

The station is being designated a Bellevue satellite station because it will not have as much equipment as the community’s other stations. Firefighter Zane O’Neil said the station will make Hillcrest safer.

“It’s definitely significant,” said O’Neil. “When they shut this place down, Hillcrest fell out of the loop. It’s going to be a lot safer in this part of the community now.”
