Using heated beeswax and coloured pigments and then applying the pasty liquid to a canvas using metal tools and special brushes to shape the paint and a blowtorch to manipulate the wax once it has cooled, local artist Lynette Jessop has created works of art she plans to sell to benefit the Crowsnest Pass Food Bank.

Jessop is an encaustic artist, which means she uses the above technique to create art out of wax, resin, tree sap, colour and canvas.

“It’s one of the oldest known art forms because of the durability of the wax,” said Jessop.

“You have something hot that you have to control. You have to make it do what you want rather than what it wants. It usually wins,” she conceded.

The 18 works of art are on display at the Stone’s Throw Cafe in Blairmore.

“There’s a little bit of symbolism in one painting with a few bees I put into the show,” said Jessop. “The rest of them are inspired by the views around the Crowsnest River. They are abstract. I personally see a lot of water motion within the paintings.”

Jessop recently moved into the former Hillcrest United Church and renovated it into a house with her husband Ian Mackenzie. She’s installed an encaustic studio in the basement complete with commercial fans to ensure the fumes that result from her work are safely blown away from her living room.

The Calgary native enjoyed a technically focused objective career in construction, project management, architecture and engineering.

Thirty-five years ago she got into art and her work took a turn for the subjective.

“Now I’m building art,” she said.
