Crowsnest senior citizen Lily Burton enjoyed an excellent meal served to her by a group of teenagers.

“It was good,” she said.

“But you can tell these kids don’t serve at home!” she quipped.

On Dec. 8, over 200 senior citizens were treated to a turkey dinner at Crowsnest Consolidated High School (CCHS) by the graduating class of 2016 at the annual Seniors’ Supper.

Ian Baxter, the vice-principal at CCHS, said the annual event has become a highlight of the school year.

“The senior Grade 12 class serving the senior citizens of the Pass,” he said. “It’s nice to see how young the senior citizens look at the end of the night. They really get rejuvenated.”

For a small donation used to cover the costs of the evening, the community’s seniors were bussed to the event, enjoyed a catered meal from Chris’ Restaurant served to them by the senior class and then given an after dinner tour of the community to check out Christmas decorations, said Baxter.

“You don’t realize until your parents get into their 80s, that they don’t get out a lot and sometimes they don’t have a lot of company other than family,” he said. “So it’s nice for them to have the opportunity to go out and be with other people.”

Former principal Nestor Chorney started the annual Seniors’ Supper over 30 years ago. Back then, the senior class would cook the meal, as well as serve, but Baxter said the spirit of the occasion remains the same.

“The whole premise is the idea of seniors giving back to seniors,” he said.
