PASS program educates students on the dangers of drinking and driving

For the Parent and Student Support (PASS) program, sober driving begins in the classroom.

Last week, the group partnered with Kevin Brandvold, regional traffic safety consultant to present the Students Against Drunk Driving (SADD) Program to high school and elementary students.

Kayla Strandquist, PASS Program facilitator, said the anti-drinking and driving message was well received by the students at Crowsnest Consolidated High School and Isabelle Sellon School.

Elementary school students were included because they stood to gain from the project, said Strandquist.

“They go to Christmas parties where people are drinking,” she said. “They actually know quite a bit about it so it was quite well received at that school.”

The high school students were allowed to try on “impaired” goggles, which throw off the wearers’ vision, giving them the impression that they’re drunk. Brandvold then had students do a sobriety test.

“That got a lot of the high school kids attention,” said Strandquist.

By way of homework, the students where given liquor bags to be coloured with anti-drinking and driving slogans, which were collected and distributed to the four liquor stores in the community.

The students left messages on around 300 bags, said Strandquist, which the liquor stores will be giving out until Christmas to encourage revelers to call a cab, get a ride or abstain from alcohol before driving this holiday season.
