Derek Saretzky, the man accused of killing a little girl and her father, has been charged with the death of Hannah Meketech, 69.

On Sept. 9, 2015 police and paramedics responded to a call from a concerned neighbour and found Meketech dead inside her Coleman home. Autopsy results showed she was the victim of a homicide but the cause of death was never released.

A few days later, Terry Blanchette, 27, was found dead in his Blairmore home. An Amber Alert was issued for his missing two-year-old daughter Hailey Dunbar-Blanchette. The alert for Hailey spread to B.C., Saskatchewan and the U.S. state of Montana. Her remains were found north of Blairmore.

The RCMP charged 23-year-old Saretzky, a former friend of Dunbar’s, with two counts of first-degree murder in relation to the deaths of Blanchette and Hailey. On April 20, 2016 Mounties announced Saretzky had been charged with the first-degree murder of Meketech.

“The fact that these deaths occurred in small town settings where everyone knows their neighbours compounds the shock and makes the situation all the more challenging for those that live there,” Inspector Derek Williams said at a morning news conference. “The RCMP is committed to serving those communities and working with them to restore the sense of personal safety and security they enjoyed before these troubling events.”

“The motivation (of Meketech’s murder) is difficult to say,” Williams added. “Through our investigation we were able to determine that the two were known to each other.”

The investigation was intensive and utilized the skills and expertise of several specialized sections including the RCMP’s Major Crimes Unit – South (MCU) and Forensic Identification Section (FIS), as well as resources from the Crowsnest Pass RCMP detachment.

The Lethbridge Crown Prosecutor’s Office is managing the criminal proceedings against Saretzky.

Saretzky’s next court appearance has yet to be determined but will be coordinated by the Lethbridge Crown Prosecutor’s Office.

Meketech was a member of the Crowsnest Community Support Society (CCSS).

“I think it’s a real sad day again for the families,” said Meketech’s friend Jeff Paulson. “It’s just one more tragedy that follows a group of people who put so much into this community. Tragedy can happen in good families too.”
