Representatives from Coleman’s Rum Runner were in council chambers May 3, asking the municipality to remove parking restrictions from a street alongside the restaurant.

“The parking issue is slowly affecting our business,” said general manager Tim May. “Customers are finding it difficult. Some are receiving violation tickets.”

It’s been over a year since the Ministry of Transportation enacted parking restrictions along the stretch of Highway 3 that runs through Coleman and on 79th Street. Both sites had previously provided parking for Rum Runner customers. May said he supports parking restrictions along the highway but asked they be lifted on 79th Street.

“Where on earth do we put all the vehicles?” he asked. “Until a year ago, parking wasn’t an issue.”

May said the restaurant is one of the Pass’ most iconic businesses. The Rum Runner won the 2016 Crowsnest Pass Chamber of Commerce Business of the Year award, it’s ranked highly on the travel and review site Trip Advisor and its 25 staff members include locals, students and people from around the world. During the busy summer months the restaurant sells over 1,000 burgers a month, said May.

Mayor Blair Painter thanked them for their presentation.

“We all agree the Rum Runner is a great asset to our community,” said Painter. “We’ve had a lot of deliberation about this [but] we do have other residents on that block with the opposite concerns.”

Painter said the issue would be discussed at the next Governance and Priorities Meeting.
