Council compromises on parking

With a decision to lift parking restrictions from portions of 79th Street in Coleman, council is trying to appease both the owners of an important community business and residents.

On May 17, council chose to remove the four no parking signs on the southwest and northeast sides of 79th Street. Two of the signs are in front of the Rum Runner restaurant and the other two are in front of a property belonging to the owners of the restaurant, which is used for staff accommodations.

Council made the decision after being petitioned by Rum Runner general manager Tim May and owner Jody Wood on May 3. The Rum Runner representatives claimed parking restrictions on Highway 3 and 79th Street were hurting business.

Sheldon Steinke reviewed their petition and said it was ineligible because it was invalid under the Municipal Government Act, but council chose to act anyway.

“We recognize the petition as invalid but there is an issue of parking on this street,” said Councillor Dean Ward.

Council said the parking issue around the Rum Runner restaurant in Coleman has been an issue for some time. The restaurants owners want parking restrictions lifted. Residents on 79th Street claim that Rum Runner customers park in their spots and sometimes block their driveways.

The problem is worse in winter. As council discussed, pickups with trailers and diesel trucks, sometimes left idling, are parked for long periods in front of residents’ houses while their occupants go in for a burger and beer.
