Randy Trotter, a retired oil and gas worker, is pursuing his lifelong passion for art.

After retiring about a year ago from a decades-long career as a heavy-duty mechanic, Randy Trotter discovered that he’s about as good in a studio as he was in a mine.

Now the tradesman turned painter is hobnobbing with local creative types and slowly establishing himself as an accomplished artist.

“I’ve been hanging around and joining local artists,” said Trotter. “And lots of them have degrees, I don’t, but we’re getting along great and we’re feeding off each other for creativity.”

The 61-year old Crowsnest resident specializes in painting landscapes, homesteads, ranches and vistas.

Trotter said he also draws inspiration from old buildings and structures because, “they’ve got character and a story behind them.”

Now a fulltime artist, Trotter has integrated himself into the Pass’s budding artistic community and recently took part in an artists’ studio tour of the area.

Few, if any, other Crowsnest artists have a blue-collar background or have worked as heavy-duty mechanics in the oil and gas industry but Trotter said he has no problem interacting with his new colleagues.

“I’m totally unique there,” he admitted. “But I’m learning from these academics and yet, they listen to me. I like this because there is a mix.”

“I’m just going to keep going because it’s working for me,” he added.

Trotter was born in Peterborough, Ontario. He moved to Crowsnest Pass in 1972 and began painting in 1992.
