Elk Valley Herald Reporter
A collective agreement that expired in October of 2015 was replaced by a new five-year collective agreement that was ratified by employees at Teck's Elkview Operations on December 4 and announced December 8.

The agreement covers approximately 770 unionized employees at Elkview represented by the United Steelworkers Local 9346. There were 785 eligible voters with Elkview and of those 647 ballots were returned. 511 employees were in favour of the agreement and 136 were against it. This resulted in a 78.9% vote in favour of the new agreement.

"We are pleased to have achieved a collective agreement that is fair to employees and supports the ongoing viability of the operation," Manager of Community and Aboriginal Affairs, Nic Milligan.

United Steelworkers Local 7884 at Fording River also reached an agreement that saw 779 ballots issued and all ballots returned. There were 646 employees in favour and 133 against the new agreement. This resulted in an 83% approval from employees.

Both Elkview and Fording River decided to use the expertise of Vince Ready for mediation. Ready has extensive knowledge and history in mediation. He is active in every province and territory of Canada, and is named as an Arbitrator/Mediator in over 600 Collective Agreements. He has arbitrated and/or mediated over 7,000 labour and commercial disputes in Canada.
