An example of the pearls you can find with Shucken, Eh.

A new service started by Coleman residents Jacqueline and Jeremy Ryder gives you the opportunity to procure one of the classiest jewelry accessories: pearls.

Shuckin’ Eh is a Facebook-based service that hosts live parties where customers can purchase salt-water Akoya oysters for $20 and a party will stream live where you can sit back, relax and enjoy the strangely therapeutic effect as they’re shucked, revealing a pearl (or lack of) inside.

“If you order an oyster, you are guaranteed a pearl,” says Jacqueline, explaining that another oyster will be opened if the first one was a dud.

Customers can also order an oyster to shuck themselves at home for $15, but there is no guarantee of finding a pearl. Shuckin’ Eh also has jewelry on sale and discounts on bulk purchases are possible. A new service that Shuckin’ Eh will be offering is an in-home party for residents of the Crowsnest Pass.

Since Jacqueline and Jeremy started the business on Oct. 31 last year, 100 oysters have been shucked for clients all across Canada.

“We had seen a bunch of other videos and other people doing this out of the States and out of Australia. When we started, we couldn’t find another one in Canada,” says Jacqueline. “It just popped up on my news feed one day and I poked my nose into it and thought, ‘Wow, this is amazing’.”

While finding a pearl inside a wild oyster is actually quite rare, Shuckin’ Eh uses a distributor of farmed oysters in Japan, almost guaranteeing a lustrous ball inside each one. Pearls can be a rainbow of hues - pink, white, silver, gold, black, blue, even red. There could even be twins, two pearls inside the same oyster.

“I have yet to open an oyster without a pearl in it. They’re cultured, they’re farmed and they’re meant to have pearls in them,” she says. “The pearls are AAA quality. It's very rare that we have a deformity in any of them.”

Jacqueline says she has almost as much fun as the customer when shucking oysters.

“I have no idea what colour [the pearls] are going to be or what size. It’s so much excitement for me to be opening them for other people, as well,” she says.

You can learn more about the service at the Shuckin’ Eh Facebook page at https://www. facebook.com/ShuckinEh.
