Mining for Miracles hopes to raise $2.9 million for BC Children’s Hospital

Mining for Miracles fundraising campaign, the BC mining industry’s long-standing fundraising campaign, launched on Feb. 1.

This year, the initiative aims to raise $2.9 million to support the development of the Transplantation & Cell Therapy Program (TRACE) for the BC Children’s Hospital.

The TRACE program uses a patient’s own cells to prevent rejection of organ transplants, kill cancer cells and fight infection.

“Children with organ transplants currently have to travel to the hospital for a biopsy fairly regularly. The new clinic that we’re funding will replace that with a simple urine or blood test,” says Jeff Hanman, the Mining for Miracles co-chair. “The hope is that over time, that will reduce the amount of trips that children living with organ transplants have to make to the hospital.”

Three primary fundraisers will run as part of the Mining for Miracles campaign. The first fundraiser, valued at $16,000, is through selling Diamond Draw tickets that give the public a chance to win a 1.01 carat diamond and an associated gold ring. The second fundraiser is the sale of Jeans Day tickets, an event taking place on May 4.

“The third, which is really our signature fundraiser,” says Hanman, “is that we hold a pie throw every year. The public can go on to the Mining for Miracles website and donate to whichever party they’d like to see throw the pie at the others. So whoever raises the most funds gets to pie their competitor in the face in downtown Vancouver in front of a large audience at the art gallery.”

Mining for Miracles has raised over $26 million since its inception in 1988, and last year’s campaign raised $3 million for the CAUSES Research Clinic at BC Children’s Hospital.

“Mining for Miracles is really a great example of the spirit of the women and men who work in the mining industry,” says Hanman. “That level of fundraising just wouldn’t be possible if it weren’t for operations like those in the Elk Valley and the communities that surround it.”

More information and the option to donate can be found on the Mining for Miracles website at www.miningformiracles.org.
