A group of approximately 20 people gathered at the Structural Truss Systems building on March 2 to meet and give an audience to Canada’s Conservative Party candidate Andrew Scheer, who was stopping in ahead of the federal Progressive Conservative leadership forum at the Lethbridge Lodge.

The audience questioned Scheer on a range of topics, from how he intends to defeat the Liberal party, to his thoughts on defeating ISIS, accepting refugees in Canada and what he means when he says that his vision is focused on small government.

Originally from Ottawa, Ontario, Scheer moved to Saskatchewan, where his wife is from. His riding is Regina-Qu’Appelle in the northeast part of Regina. Scheer was first elected as MP in 2004 and became Deputy Speaker in the House of Commons in 2008, the youngest to hold this post in Canadian history. Scheer is currently serving as House Leader.

Foothills MP John Barlow was in attendance and expressed support for Scheer.

“Andrew ticks all the boxes for me,” he said. “He is someone that I know is bringing a positive message and the right policy, and who will bridge east and west, rural and urban, French and English. Most important, I think he is the one who will keep conservatives united.”

Scheer is one of 14 contenders for the Tory leadership. Conservatives will choose their new leader in May 2017.
