The municipality is considering installing a dog park in the community. The project is in very early stages where the Sport and Recreation Board is planning a public survey to gather the community’s input on what they would like to see.

“The Rec Services Board members had an opportunity to comment on the survey,” says Joey O’Brien, Manager of Community Services. “We will then compile all their input and a SurveyMonkey poll will be driven off the municipality’s website to all the citizens, which will help guide us better on where to put it and offer a bit of education as to what choices can be made.”

According to O’Brien, the plan is to build one dog park as a pilot project, learn from it, and potentially install more in other parts throughout Crowsnest Pass.

“I think we need more than one, because no one’s going to drive from Coleman to Bellevue to walk their dog,” says O’Brien.

The Rec Board is considering many points relating to the dog park, from location and fencing to whether the park should be off-leash, and how to capitalize on the opportunity to draw more tourists to the area.

“We are exactly the right distance from Calgary that people might need to get their dog out of the car,” says O’Brien. “One of the elements is whether we should have one park really visible from the highway to encourage travellers to pull off to let their dogs have a quick run. That’s an economic development consideration as well because when people pull off, maybe it should be next to a coffee shop or something in the community.”

The survey is expected to go out to the public “in the next couple of weeks,” says O’Brien, and will give the opportunity to weigh in on preferred locations, what features they would like to see in the dog park, and other suggestions they may have.
