A weeklong cruise to Alaska, a $200 gift card to Allied Hardware, a three-day trip to Las Vegas, a $120 gift certificate to Chris’ Restaurant.

These are just some of the prizes that could be won in the Blairmore Lions Trip of the Month Raffle.

Here’s how it works: you buy a ticket for $120 and your name is entered into one draw a month for 12 months starting January 2018.

“The great attraction to this raffle is that there are only 450 tickets sold,” says Blairmore Lions member and raffle organizer Bill Sharpe, “so your chances of winning are a lot greater than other types of raffles. Every ticket sold is eligible for every draw.”

The initial sticker price of $120 may be daunting for some people, but with 12 draws in total, it works out to being $10 a month.

Each draw has one grand prize of a trip and two secondary prizes of gift certificates to local establishments, for a total prize value of $32,490.

“The great thing about this raffle is that you don’t have to take the trip as is,” says Sharpe. “You can contact our travel agent, which is Global Getaways, take that value and apply it to a trip of your own.”

If your preferred trip is more expensive, you pay the different and if it’s less, you receive a travel credit that can be used in the future.

The Blairmore Lions Club paid full retail value for all prizes. The club hopes to make $19,000 from the raffle if every ticket were to sell, after expenses.

But this raffle isn’t only about the prizes – all proceeds will stay within the community to fund and finance local events and clubs by the Blairmore Lions.

This is the first time the Lions are holding a raffle of this kind after Sharpe got the idea at one of the Lions district meetings,

“The Claresholm Lions have been doing it for 24 years and they’ve sold out every year with the exception of the first year. They were about 20-25 tickets short of selling that first year,” he says. “We’re hoping that it’s a successful project here, too, and will continue year to year as long as it’s running. We’re excited about it.”

Tickets went on sale at the end of August and already, approximately 200 have been sold.

The Lions hope to sell out before the deadline to purchase tickets, December 24.

“We designed the raffle to fit those dates because we feel that it would be a great Christmas stocking stuffer, especially for those people who are hard to buy for. It’s still scary for us. Once we get to the breakeven point, we’ll breathe a sigh of relief because we’re not losing money at that time,” says Sharpe, adding that their break-even point is at 287 tickets.

The monthly winner draws will go in conjunction with the Lions’ TV bingo that’s played the first Tuesday of each month at the Lions Hall, with the exception of the first draw, which will be pulled on Tuesday, January 9.

The Blairmore Lions are a community group that has been active in Crowsnest Pass since 1944, donating to community barbecues, running Meals on Wheels during Christmas holidays, maintaining Lions Park, contributing to Darcy’s Nature Walk, and many other groups and activities.

“We donate to various other groups within the community and our motto is ‘we serve’,” says Sharpe.

The Lions currently have 21 members, but are looking for more volunteers. They meet the first and third Monday of each month.

“Anybody that likes serving their community, getting out and helping at different events, definitely get a hold of us,” says Sharpe.

Tickets can be purchased from any Lions member and every Tuesday between 7 p.m. and 8:30 p.m. at the Lions Hall, 12130 20 Ave., Blairmore.
