Pumpkins in the Park cancelled, a first

Severe wintry weather prompted the Coleman Community Society to cancel the annual Pumpkins in the Park event for the first time ever.

“We didn’t think it was prudent to hold it given the state of the roads and walking paths and have somebody slip and fall or have a road accident getting there. We have held Pumpkins when there has been snow on the ground, but not this much, or when it has rained or snowed during, but this was unusual circumstances,” says Francine Kilgannon, the secretary/treasurer of the Coleman Community Society.

To the chagrin of many in the community, the event isn’t the type that can be postponed either, as pumpkins would have frozen outside and turned to mush by the next day.

Although it doesn’t cost much to run Pumpkins in the Park, all allocated funds will go to other events put on by the society.

“What did lose out was The Food Bank as Pumpkins in the Park historically takes in a good amount of both food and money for them,” says Kilgannon.

For anyone who wanted to donate at the event can still do so by dropping off their donations either at The Food Bank or at Stone’s Throw Café.

Christmas in the Park on December 3 is the next event organized by the Coleman Community Society to take place. The annual celebration includes festive activities for children, families and anyone with holiday spirit.

“With our luck this year, it just might be Pumpkins weather at the time,” laughs Kilgannon.
