With a helping hand from Mother Nature, the snow guns up at the Pass Powderkeg Ski Area (PPK) have been working full time to get the hill ready for its earliest opening… ever.

PPK has announced a soft opening of the lower half of the mountain on Friday, November 10, ranking it one of the first hills to open in Canada. Traditionally, the lower portion of the mountain opened around Christmas, with the upper portion opening well into January.

The hill will run on an abbreviated schedule on this preview weekend, open from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. on opening day and Saturday, November 11, opening later in respect of Remembrance Day. On Sunday, November 12, operating hours will be from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Stay tuned to the PPK’s social media pages, as a bonus opening day may be announced for Monday, November 13.

As an opening day perk, PPK’s General Manager Joey O’Brien is offering free ski lessons to anyone interested that day. Lift tickets will also be half the price that entire weekend seeing as only half the mountain is open, at $25 for adults and $12.50 for youth.

The hill’s five snow guns have been working 24/7 since last Tuesday – a total of 144 hours! – and, along with natural snowfall, have accumulated an average snow depth of approximately 40cm.

“In terms of snow, we have enough right now,” said O’Brien on Monday. “It’s not even a question. Now, we are determining how much wider we can get it.”

O’Brien is referring to the hill’s main run, The Face, which was priority number one for snowmaking.

According to Joey O’Brien, Manager of Community Services with the municipality, the hill will only be open on weekends until its official opening day in December.

The hill is still waiting to receive their four rented T40 snowmaking guns from TechnoAlpin. The new guns, forecasted to arrive next week, allow for better snowmaking at warmer temperatures with one third of the power and water than the previous decade-old guns, essentially deferring the rental cost in savings.
