Instead of asking for gifts for herself, Cora asked her friends to make contributions to the local animal shelter for her ninth birthday party. Pictured above is Cora holding all the money they donated, a total of $145.

It wasn’t toys or games that Cora Brands wanted for her birthday – it was the selfless opportunity to make someone else happy. In this case… cats!

“I thought since I have so much stuff and I love animals, I wanted to donate some money to the SPCA,” says Cora, who turned 9 years old on November 15.

“On the invitations, I said that instead of gifts this year, I wanted to make a donation to the SPCA,” she says.

All of Cora’s friends who attended her birthday party participated in the initiative and in total, they raised $145 that they donated to the Crowsnest Pass SPCA.

“I was really proud of her,” says Cora’s mom Meaghan. “Our family is pretty big on rescuing animals and animal welfare.”

Wendy Zack, coordinator with the Crowsnest Pass SPCA, says she was surprised to hear that a 9-year-old girl had asked for donations to the animal shelter for her birthday.

“The SPCA is thrilled that the youth in the Crowsnest Pass are taking the initiative to think about the SPCA and put back into their community. We are very pleased that they are thinking of us,” she says.

The money will go to the operations costs of the shelter for items like food and supplies.
