A new dining experience is open in the Crowsnest Pass.

Encounters Wine Bar and Small Plate Kitchen is officially open for business after a delay in the opening.

Owner Dawn Rigby says that putting a restaurant at the location wasn’t always the plan.

“Originally we built the building because we needed more accommodation space,” said Rigby.

The idea to add rooms to this building and use the remaining area as a retail place was the original plan after seeing the amount of reservations she was turning down.

“For two years I kept track of every reservation I turned away because I didn’t have occupancy. It was a substantial number.”

Rigby added that she had owned a restaurant previously and wasn’t really interested in opening another one.

It wasn't until her banker told her that the idea of a retail space wasn't ideal and told her a restaurant would work better that she combined the ideas of accommodations and dining and opened Encounters Wine Bar and Small Plate Kitchen on the main floor with one two-bedroom suite and then added four suites to the upstairs of the building as well.

The style of the restaurant and dishes served are based heavily on Italian influences with some Asian and Norwegian dishes as well.

The menu is strictly more appetizer-sized dishes with the restaurant being a small plate style of dining.

Rigby says that her menu will change fairly often to reflect what ingredients she is able to bring into the restaurant.

When asked about what will make this venture a success, Rigby says it all comes down to the customers.

“Without customers we aren’t here. Multitudes of happy customers make success. I have to pay the bills but really it becomes a success when the customers are happy and want to come back.”

People looking to try out Encounters Wine Bar and Small Plate Kitchen are able to do so weekly from 4-10 p.m. Thursday to Sunday.
