Local group celebrates Crowsnest Pass through original music and storytelling

Mudlarker, the local folk-rock band known for their storytelling and community-inspired songs, is set to release their first studio album, Making Good Time, on July 3. The album, a 12-track collection, is inspired by the people, places and history of the Crowsnest Pass and surrounding areas.

The title track is a tribute to band member Becky Pichurski’s mother-in-law, Pat Pichurski.

“She always used to say we were ‘making good time’ no matter where we were coming from,” Becky explained, “It’s also a nod to the idea that it’s never too late to dive into something new, and invest in your passions.”

Pichurski and band mate Suzanne Scott first met singing in a local rock cover band and found their shared musical energy led naturally into original song writing. While rooted in folk, the album features an energetic rock influence.

“The sound that emerged is both surprising and energetic,” said Pichurski, “It really represents our musical relationship and personalities.”

Songs on the album include local references such as “Take My Life Underground,” written about the Bellevue Underground Mine, “Waiting In The Dark,” inspired by the Frank Slide, and “Airtime,” which came from the band’s experience playing at a Pro Bull-Riding Rodeo. Recording the album was a rewarding challenge explained Pichurski.

“Being in the studio was both exhilarating and exhausting,” she said, “We learned the value of the words ‘do it again’.”

Produced by Calgary’s Lorrie Matheson, the album features local musicians Shelly Groves on violin and vocals, Tynan Groves on electric and slide guitar, and Chris Dadge on drums.

The lyric that closes the title track “we’re making good time… maybe that’s the only kind there is,” captured the group’s mindset during production. “It reminded us that there is no such thing as wasted time when attempting to create something beautiful,” said Pichurski.

Mudlarker’s music is deeply rooted in the local scene.

“This community has a thriving, positive, supportive and loving music community,” said Pichurski, “Songs are often shaped by contributions from others in jams and rehearsals. We are so grateful to live and create in this beautiful place.”

To celebrate the release, Mudlarker will host a full-band performance at The Pass Beer Co. on July 24 from 6 to 9 p.m., featuring Suzanne Scott on vocals and bass, Becky Pichurski on vocals and acoustic guitar, Shelly Groves on violin and vocals, Tynan Groves on lead guitar, and Jesse Bond on drums.

Making Good Time will be available on all major streaming platforms starting July 3, with pre-orders opening June 26. CDs and new Mudlarker merchandise, designed by Shelly Groves, will be available at live events.
